Tough Moments

It's not often that I delve into matters of my heart that are difficult. Unless we're talking medical school I tend to stick to positives, things I can share without feeling vulnerable, parts of my life that are easy and fun. I'm sure it's partly to do with the aspect of life that sometimes it's easier to just not think about things, to not let your mind wander into territory you know it doesn't like. And part of it is the susceptibility and unevenness that it sometimes puts you in. A bridge with no end. A boat without a paddle.

But there's something that's been on my mind more often than I'd like to admit as of late and enough is enough, sometimes you just have to let it come and delve right in.

The first day of the month should have been my dad's 61st birthday. And I guess in some sense it still was. But he hasn't been here to celebrate that day in thirteen years and thirteen years later the day passes by and I still feel that hole in my heart, a hole that's gotten smaller with time, a hole that's been somewhat filled by the love from others and the memories of him I'll have forever. But a hole none the less.

This year was quite different than the last twelve though. Because my life is drastically different this April than it's ever been. There's a sweet, little babe in my belly and even just typing those words in the context of my dad sends a pang through my gut I can't explain.

He won't be here to hold this baby of ours and nuzzle his beard on new soft skin. Our babe will grow up not knowing his voice, his jokes, his stories. Some day J and I will have to explain why there's a missing grandpa in his or her life. I'll spend years potentially finding parts of my dad that show up in our child; his facial features, his hair color, his personality. And part of that is a blessing, being able to remember him and cherish him. But it's also a curse at the same time, I'll never see the two of them together, sporting matching hair lines or grins or whatever it might turn out to be.

Growing up without my dad around has been hard in more ways that I can probably even pinpoint but some of the hardest are the celebratory moments I wish he was here for. My graduations, milestone birthdays, our wedding, this sweet babe. I've never talked religion here because frankly, I'm still not sure where I stand on the whole idea of it but there's no doubt in my heart that my dad is somewhere. That he's been standing in the back of the room for all these important events in my life, clapping his hands, smiling and laughing or wiping tears from his eyes.

And I like to think that wherever he is, that somehow he's already met this sweet babe of ours, that he held his grandchild in his arms before I ever did, that he introduced himself to this baby and knows him or her well. Believing this is the case helps me cope just a little easier.

My Sweet, Sweet Boy

This post has been floating around in my head wanting to be written....
but my heart has been too sad.

One week ago yesterday my mom said her (and our families) last goodbyes to our sweet boy Basil.
It was almost 12 years to the day since we brought him home....
sometimes life just works in mysterious ways.
Being in San Diego has made it hard for me to really realize that he's gone, to realize that he wont be there the next time I come home, loosing his balance on the wood floor in all his excitement. I wont be able to see his grayed face, ask him where his "dolly" is or share my bananas with him.
But I'll hold the memories of him close to my heart. I'll remember buying him his first kiddie pool for the summer, his shaved leg after surgery, and his kind way with our cat who never really liked him. I'll remember how hard I tried to convince my parents to let him sleep in my room and how since that first night he never slept anywhere else.
I'll remember him running along the fence barking, hiding under the deck when we weren't home and sunbathing until his heart was content. I'll remember his eager face waiting to come inside whenever he heard the garage door open. I'll remember his impeccable timing to always stand by his bowl for dinner at 5 o'clock each night.
I'll remember when he ate 3 dozen oatmeal cookies off the counter and didn't eat for 2 days after. I'll remember showing him off as a puppy to all my friends and how he brought my dad and I together all those years ago. I'll remember his keen sense of hearing whenever we were cutting veggies on the cutting board and how polite and gentle he always was.
I'll remember how he never really enjoyed playing fetch and how he'd much rather be sitting or laying by your side the whole day. I'll remember how he truly was a member of our family, not just our pet. I'll remember how he hated suitcases because he loved us so much and I will always remember how much I loved him.
I know my mom made the right decision for him. I know it can be so easy to be selfish and not want them to go. But I also know that now he is his old self again, that he isn't suffering anymore and that he is the happy, wonderful, sweet, sweet boy that I love so dearly.

He will always be my boy and I will always be his girl.
I love you and I miss you Basil.

Hike Turned Injury

Do you remember the last time that O-dog (as J has started calling him lately) and I went on a hike? Well we decided to go back this past Thursday. It was my first day off, now that classes have ended and it was a gorgeous day outside again.

This time though I decided that we'd make it to the top. He's been building up his endurance at the dog park lately, we weren't pressed for time at all and I figured, "why not?"

He loved every minute of it and was running up those hills like a champ. He sported his classic pant with his extra-large tongue and even learned to drink out of my Camel-back.
Once at the top, 1.5 miles of trail and ~1600 feet in elevation, we enjoyed the 360 degree views...
and I even shared my banana (his favorite) with my happy pup.
We spent a good 20 minutes at the top. It was a gorgeous day and definitely a nice place to relax.
We were both pretty tired after our trek down the mountain and I assumed we'd both have some tired and sore muscles. I let him rest for a good bit while I showered and had lunch before I went and volunteered. He limped a little bit when I took him out before I left but I didn't think anything was really wrong. He did hike farther than he'd ever gone and I thought I checked him out pretty good.

Welp, I was wrong....

Turns out my little pup got blisters on the pads of his feet from our hiking adventure. My heart breaks for him.

Just like the blisters we get, there were flaps of skin and lots of tenderness. His limp got worse over the course of the night so with some Googling we decided it was best to start handling the situation. I cleaned his feet in soapy water, wrapped them with gauze and covered them in socks. (Hospital socks so he didn't slip, obviously.)
My poor baby. :-(
Even though everything I read online said that they will heal on their own with time, we decided a trip to the vet the next morning was our best bet. The doc assured us that his feet were by no means the worst that she's seen, told us time heals all, gave us some cleaner, antibiotic gel and some pain meds and set us home with our limping pup.

He is already getting much better, isn't acting so depressed and has even started doing his classic gallop down the hallway. He's not nearly in the clear yet; we're supposed to keep him out of the dirt and at low activity for a week but I'm so happy improvements are being made.
We do put socks on him when we're not home, just to keep him from not licking and even though it's sad he's hurt, I can't help but think how cute he looks in Daddy's dress socks.

Here's to a happy Saturday and a quick recovery!

Broken HD = Broken Heart

Today is a sad day ladies and gentlemen.
Well, technically it was yesterday.
But it's still lingering.

My MacBook is officially broken.
Okay, so I don't know if it's "official" yet
but given the fact that it:
doesn't turn on
stays on either a blank gray screen
or a screen with a question mark folder
makes odd clicking sounds

That's broken in my book.

And I feel like this...

Honestly, that's probably a little too angry.
It's more like this....
I have to keep myself from not thinking about losing everything on my computer.
All my pictures, my music, my files......
Let's be real, it's really just about my pictures.
It makes me want to cry.

And the dumbest thing about it all is that
I have a stinking external drive!
But did I copy everything on there recently?
Of course not. That would just make things too easy.

Please, please, PLEASE Genius Bar tell me it's not too late.
Please work your magic and tell me my computer's fine
and most importantly that you can get all my stuff back to me.

:-(
