Currently [v8]

Well hello there! I promise I'm still alive. Let's check in and throw in some pictures of Mark for good measure shall we?

Reading: articles on bleeding disorders, leukemias & lymphomas, and dysfunctions of spleens. Glorious I know but as is the life of a medical student. Throw in a bit of recap reading from Babywise: Giving your infant the gift of nighttime sleep to make sure I'm not totally blowing the "schedule" we're trying to set for the babe with some Brown bear brown bear and Where's spot? and it's all sorts of fun reading around here.

Watching: a surprising amount of recorded shows from the DVR with my hubs. I assumed that once the baby came there would be absolutely no time for such thing but we've actually been able to keep up with our favorite shows. On the queue that we both enjoy is Scandal, How to get Away with Murder, The Blacklist, and Law & Order SVU. Throw in some Chicago Fire and 19 Kids & Counting for me and the list suddenly seems extraordinarily long. Whoops.

Listening: to J make jokes with Mark downstairs and it warms my heart to hear their little conversations. J is the best dad and I can't wait to watch (or in this case, listen to) their relationship grow. Also listening to the Rockabye Baby! station on Pandora because it's actually quite fantastic.
Loving: that Thanksgiving is less than two weeks away and that Christmas is right around the corner. This has always been my favorite time of year, the festivities, the celebration, the family time and this year is no exception. Not to mention we have our little man to include in the traditions this year. Now if only I could convince my scrooge of a husband to hang some Christmas lights outside (and I promise not to turn them on until December!) then I'd be in seventh heaven.

Hating: the freezing cold weather (aka negative degrees) that decided to show up all of a sudden, my post-baby body (this changes day to day, todays a hate day), the fact that I don't have regular doctors appointments with my OB anymore (because I actually really like her) and spending time away from my sweet little boy.
Drinking: water, water and more water. With the occasional Vanilla Porter thrown in for good measure. They say dark beer helps with milk production and I just so happen to love it.

Wearing: my typical mom-med-student-uniform. Yoga pants with the top unfolded to hold in my still squishy belly, a tank with a nursing bra underneath, a sweatshirt because I'm always cold and a headband because this unwashed hair is out of control.

Needing: to start getting back into a workout routine but where oh where to fit that in is the problem. It's been months, probably at least 5, since I've used my membership at 24 Hour thanks to the end of pregnancy making me feel miserably huge and then the fact that we now have an infant. But somethings gotta give at least occasionally. J has a pretty decent set up of weights in our basement that I need to take advantage of. I'd also love to stop by the actual gym for a treadmill/elliptical workout on my way home sometime soon and start making a habit of it again. They say working out gives you more energy and goodness knows I could use that on the daily!
Feeling: generally happy, truthfully. Sure there are rough days and rough moments. Like sobbing in bed at 4am while nursing Mark because I have never felt such exhaustion before. Like fighting with my husband because we're both at our whits end and can't catch a break. But then there are moments of goodness, a 4 hour stretch at night, the flash of a gummy grin from a sweet boy, a compliment that turns your day around, a test score that proves I really can do this all. Life is definitely hard right now but I wouldn't change it for anything.

Thankful v11

Lately I've been thankful...
[+] for my silly husband who is so excited to become a dad that he talks about it every day

[+] for moments of quiet and the company of little boy wiggles
[+] for big tubs, warm water and late night dips in the tub even if my belly sticks out of the water

[+] for being able to reach my un-swollen toes still and manicures that last
[+] for growing baby bellies and diaper gifts to catch all the poops

[+] for continued warm weather especially knowing that none of my pants fit anymore
[+] for a sweet pup who's turned into my shadow and is always close by just watching

[+] for moments of grace when the going gets tough
[+] for a permanent and quite handsome date to any and all events

[+] for less than a month till our little boy arrives
[+] for little laundry and a packed diaper bag waiting for the big day

[+] for afternoon naps and body pillows
[+] for our lives being consumed with all things baby

What are you thankful for these days?

Around Here Lately

There's been a handful of happenings around here that aren't significant in themselves to deserve their own posts but that I want to share anyways. So here's a compilation of some fun we've been having lately....
J and I spent the 4th of July out at the lake in our usual tradition although this year was a bit different than years in the past. We got up there Friday morning and stayed only a single night because I'm not sure this prego-bod of mine could have done another night in the pop-up. It was supposed to be over 90 degrees all weekend and thankfully the heat wasn't as tough to deal with as we anticipated. Since I can't actually get in the lake (or rivers or streams, etc etc etc) I was a bit worried about not having a way to cool off easily but plenty of water and cold drinks, dipping my feet in and rides on the boat were lifesavers. It's crazy to look back at all the summers we've spent up at the lake and know that next summer it won't just be the two of us anymore!

This past Tuesday my favorite med-school ladies and I attended the wedding of one of the gals in our group. Her wedding was tucked up in the mountains at one of the ski resorts and after almost missing the ceremony thanks to some construction we spent the afternoon and evening celebrating even more love this summer. She was a stunning bride, the forecast for rain didn't produce, they shared in an Irish blessing much like the one J and I had at our own wedding and the evening went off fantastically. Complete with BBQ for dinner, cupcakes and a cookie bar, and plenty of dancing it was great to celebrate another marriage with close friends. Also, I'm thrilled this dress still fits although it's quite different than the last time I wore it when we were in Mexico for spring break!

Now here's to a few smaller happenings around here. The other night our neighbors puppy decided she didn't want to be in her yard anymore and instead dug under the fence to come play with Ollie. It was quite the surprise to see her wiggle her way under and they had quite the ball running laps in the yard. After a few minutes of play time (and enough time for J to fill in the hole she dug) we kindly returned her to her own yard laughing at her mischievous ways.

Baby boy officially attended his first MLB game over the weekend. It was scorching hot, probably around 95 degrees and our original seats were directly in the sun. Thankfully after sneaking our way into some shaded seats we were able to enjoy the rest of the game and avoid heat stroke! I can't wait to bring him to games next summer as a 9 & 10 month old!

We've been making some serious progress in little man's nursery over the last few weeks and I'm happy to say there's only one major thing that needs to be hung on the walls, one more sewing project I have to tackle and one more piece of "furniture" to buy and his room will basically be ready! We're waiting until after my baby shower to do a lot of the last minute smaller purchases we'll need (onesies, diapering supplies, etc etc) but his room is basically ready for him to arrive and is Ollie's new favorite hang out place. And mine too if we're being honest. Sometimes I sit in there imaging holding him on my chest instead of in my belly. Ollie walks around sniffing things and peaks through the bars into the crib. So crazy that he'll be here in around 80 days!

Numbers v3

THREE: number of dollars I spent on this orange and blue dress from Goodwill, originally from Target and with the original tags on still.

FIFTY: number of compliments I got on it a few weekend ago at our first wedding celebration of the year. thankful it still fits the bump.
FIVE: the number of wedding festivities still left for this summer. one bachelorette party and four wedding celebrations. I love this time of year.

ONE HUNDRED: wooden beads that need painting for our little man's massive abacus that J built for the wall above his crib.
FOUR: the number of baby related classes J and I are officially registered for this summer; birth, baby care, breastfeeding and daddy bootcamp!

ONE HUNDRED & THREE: the number of days until my due-date. time is flying!
THIRTY-FIVE: the number of written exams during my first year of medical school. not including all lab practicals and quizzes and practice tests.

SIX: the number of weeks of summer break I'll be enjoying starting this past monday.
THREE: the number of times, including last night, that I've seen James Taylor live in concert. thanks to my momma for taking me with her last night because it was a fantastic show at one of the best venues there is.

FIFTEEN HUNDRED: steps to get from our parking spot to our seats at red rocks (not to mention all uphill). this prego was leaving lots of people in the dust even if I was huffing and puffing.
UNLIMITED: the amount of time or dollars we'd spend on our first born, fur baby. he gave us quite the scare monday night and we are so thankful to have him home post-surgery, silly hair cut and all.

Currently [v7]

 >>> Almost finished with week 3 out of 7 of the notoriously hardest course of the entire year. I've been spending a lot of time in the anatomy lab at school and sitting at my desk when I'm home. Thankfully when I'm home there's usually a furry friend who joins me in the office for his afternoon and evening naps with some belly rubs thrown in for good measure. I kid you not, he's always in there with me and I love it.

>>> Loving the Cartwheel iPhone app for Target. I've always tried to be thrifty and not spend money when I don't have to but I just simply don't have the time to delve into couponing. Let's be honest, that takes a lot of work to make it useful. This phone app however is super simple and I love using it. I'll occasionally browse through the deals to see if anything pops up that's a great savings. Otherwise I keep a running list in my head of things like lotion, ziplocs, things we need occasionally and look for deals on those items before I purchase them. The best part about it is that you can search a barcode while you shop to see if you could be saving money on an item already in your basket. When you go to check out you simply show the cashier the barcode on your phone and it takes off all the discounts you found. Yay, saving money!

>>> Thankful that the weather is starting to change even if it is a bit bipolar here in Colorado still. Afternoons spent reading notes on the back deck while the dog plays in the yard are much more enjoyable than it being dark by 4:30 and sitting in the office. Plus I think the extra Vitamin D I've been getting lately is making me happier, and everyone appreciates that. I actually don't want it to turn into summer quite so fast though because that'll definitely hinder my study habits.

>>> Obsessed with Cran-Cherry juice this week. I've always loved cranberry juice but for some reason never picked the cherry mix variety off the shelf before now. I was always a Cran-Raspberry kinda gal. But oh heavens, what was I missing! This stuff is delicious although I usually end up watering it down since it's so sweet. But hey, that just makes the bottle last longer and you can't beat that.
>>> Pleasantly enjoying our new neutral bedding gifted to us by my sister at Christmas time. When we first moved in I wasn't thrilled with the paint colors in our master bedroom but there were a handful of other projects that needed tending too right away so we never handled it. Over the last ten months the colors in our room have grown on me and while they wouldn't be what I would have chosen, they're just fine for now and not worth the effort to change at this point. So the easiest solution was to just get new bedding that correlated better and I'm much happier with the room already. Hopefully we'll be able to make a few smaller changes and decor updates and turn it into a room we love soon.

>>> A bit stunned with how our anatomy lab has been going recently. Granted I am in medical school and I knew going into it that we'd be doing dissections of essentially the whole body. But man though! I won't go into details for the sanity of everyone reading this, but seriously I've had moments where I have to force myself not to think about what we're doing because its just plain creepy!

>>> Forced to celebrate St. Patrick's Day with a Shamrock Shake a day early since our first set of exams fell on Monday and Tuesday of this week which meant no late night partying with green beers for this girl. Boy what I wouldn't give for a Guinness or a Jameson & Ginger though.

>>> Sad that there's only one slice of pie left in the fridge from Pi Day last Friday. I'm not sure if I've ever mentioned it here before but J got his masters degree in mathematics. Combine that with my overall "nerdy-ness" and we're big supporters of that "holiday". We celebrated by making pizza pies on the smoker for the first time (usually we bake them) and they turned out fantastic. Dinner was obviously followed up by pie, pecan and triple berry. But by the looks of that pie tin I might have to be making a new dessert this weekend.

>>> Looking forward to the weekend if only for the opportunity to catch up on both study material and sleep. It's been a long week, even more so when I was convinced Sunday night was really Monday night and I'm in need of some catch up time. Hopefully there will be a bit of relaxing and a possible date night with my hubs thrown in to top it off.

Finish This v6

Thanks to Jen for the throw-back engagement picture idea!
1. I celebrate Valentine's day by... loving on my husband and spending some quality time together. Sometimes that means going out for a nice dinner. Last year that meant making a multi-course dinner complete with dessert at home together. This year we're celebrating a day late to eat at a reasonable time (one restaurant only had 2:45pm available for reservations) and avoid all the crowds (not to mention I might be a zombie on Friday night). It doesn't have to be big, as long as it's filled with love.

2. My heart goes pitter-patter for... sweet notes, kisses on my forehead, dessert of any kind, a free night from school, my husband...

3. When looking for romance, my best advice is... take leaps! When I first met J, I assumed our "relationship" was just going to pan out into a summer fling. I was 18 and moving to San Diego at the end of the summer. He was 21 and already on a path through life. Not to mention we'd only spent 2 months together before facing quite a distance. But at the end of that summer I told him I loved him and that I wanted this to work. And here we are! 7 years, 3 apartments, 2 houses, 2 states, 1 silly dog and 1 marriage later.

4. My favorite love story (real or fiction) is... besides my own, right?! Ha! Let's see... Dr. Mark Green and Dr. Elizabeth Corday from the TV show ER. Maybe it's because I'm still obsessed with that show or maybe it's because I'm in the medical field but their relationship and love story are my favorite. A great balance of power, real life struggles (thanks drama-tv writers) and filled with fake, TV love! Now excuse me while I try and find time to watch all the seasons again.

5. The best relationship/love/dating advice I ever received was... make your significant other your number one priority. Granted, I'm not the best at actually following through with this as being a full time medical student definitely demands the top spot on the totem pole a good amount of the time. But it's something that I'm always conscious of and do my best to achieve. Hmm, maybe I'm finally finding my word (over a month late) for the year 2014... priority...

Finish This v5

1. I will never outgrow... my love for candy and fluffy, furry socks. I have a pretty bad sweet tooth at times and love all types of sweet treats, especially in candy form. I also always have cold feet so if I'm home in the winter I love pulling on a pair of warm socks that would never fit inside my shoes.

2. I splurge on... good food and that's about it. Ha. I don't wear expensive make-up, I try to find my clothes on the clearance rack and I search for coupons for every day necessities. I'm sure there will come a day where there's something I spend more money on but for now I think it's better this way.

3. My worst habit is... feeling like I need to control everything. I've always been an A-type personality and sometimes it's really hard for me to let someone else handle something or to just roll with the punches when things go awry. It's definitely something I know about myself and I try and make a conscious effort to quench it when the thoughts of "no, you're doing it the wrong way!!!" start popping into my head.

4. My passport represents... vacations to beaches with my family and our fantastic Ireland Honeymoon. I've been out of the country approximately half a dozen times and I love each and every trip and all the memories. I can't wait to add another stamp to the book at the end of the month!

5. My most ridiculous fear is... horses. And for absolutely no reason at all. J thinks it's hilarious (and probably annoying too) but I won't walk near them, I hate the noises they make and have no intention of ever riding one. I was never bucked off one or had any similar trauma related to them, I just do not like them.

6. My favorite thing to give is... homemade desserts. Whether it's a random treat for no reason or homemade cakes on birthdays I love being in the kitchen with someone specific in mind. This might have something to do with having a husband who is pleased through his stomach and/or my love of sweet things too but regardless. I love being able to say, "here, I made these [cookies/brownies/etc] for you".

Five on Friday v3

Today I'm linking up with Christina from Carolina Charm for "Five on Friday"
Check out the link up below.

THE GOOD LIFE BLOG

[one] I literally haven't taken a picture on my phone or big girl camera in over two weeks. Which I definitely do not like. Granted it might be because there's nothing fantastic going on around these parts lately but I still love looking back at silly moments of our day-to-day so I need to change this anti-photo streak!

[two] Even though January isn't quite over yet, February is shaping up to be a fantastic month. My birthday is in twelve short days which means a handful of celebrations with all the special people in my life. The day after that is the start of the Winter Olympics and I'm a huge sucker for Opening Ceremonies. And then at the end of the month we'll be headed on vacay for a week at the beach. Come on February! Bring me your awesomeness!

[three] Speaking of birthdays and our Mexico vacation, my mom got me a new swim suit from VS for the trip as a birthday present and I love it. It's been quite some time since I've gotten a good quality suit that wasn't just a random purchase from Target or Walmart and I'm loving the bright colors in this one. I might have to make a stop somewhere for some metallic sandals to go with before we hop on the plane.

[four] A few weeks (months? I'm losing track of time these days) I won an awesome giveaway hosted by Meg @ Life of Meg for an 8x10 photo canvas from Easy Canvas Prints. At first I didn't know what picture to use, wasn't sure if I wanted to wait until I got a better picture of J and I or something and basically, just wasn't really sure what I wanted to do with it. So I mentioned it to J and he said "why don't you have it printed with a picture of Ollie?" What a fantastic idea, I thought, and I LOVE how it turned out. The canvas is great quality and I love this pic of our silly pup with his fur blowing in the wind and can't wait to get it hung somewhere special.

[five] Tonight my mom and I are headed to a surprise 60th birthday party for a family friend we've basically known my entire life. Their family used to live across the street from us and I have tons of memories being around their family growing up, especially those NYE nights where our parents tricked us into thinking it was midnight at 10pm! I haven't seen them since our wedding and before that it was long time too so it'll be great to catch up while spending some time with my mom too.

Happy Friday and happy weekend everyone!

Finish This v3

1. A typical day in my life… usually includes a full day on campus filling my brain to the max, sometimes accompanied by some lab time in the afternoons and always with hours of studying in the evenings. Also thrown in are occasional walks with the pup, catching up with J over dinner and hopefully showering before crashing in bed. All of this is typical for a weekday, weekends are just full of studying. Ahh the joys of being a first year medical student, right?

2. You'll never see me… without my iPhone, water bottle and some form of chap-stick. Otherwise I'll try anything once, go anywhere once, etc. I'd like to say I'm open to most things.

3. It's really unattractive when a guy… picks fights, is controlling and/or thinks too highly of himself.

4. If I could buy one thing right now, it would be… a new wardrobe which would hopefully include some new jeans, a handful of adult-style tops (I'm trying to get rid of all the shirts I still have from high school) and some new fashionable pieces to wear on the beach in Mexico next month.

5. I have high expectations for… the coming year. I feel like things are finally rolling for me in every aspect of my life and can't wait to kick butt in 2014!

Finish This v2

1. If I could make anything grown on trees, it would be… time, definitely. I realize that this is a pretty standard answer (between this and money) but with the stress and consuming nature of medical school there are often times I could use extra hours. Sometimes it's too long between dates with my husband, between times seeing friends, between catch-up coffee breaks with my mom. Oh and what I wouldn't give to be able to take a nap without feeling guilty about the hours it wastes that could should be used studying!

2. I can't stop smiling… if I have a cup of coffee in my hand, quality time with great friends, success on a test, and/or acting goofy with my husband.

3. I get back to nature by… walks with the pup at a nearby park, walls of windows to watch the sun come up (and then go back down) from school, summer BBQs and yard games. Ahh, I'm ready for summer now.

4. I dread washing… the dog. Ha. Okay so it's not actually the washing part thats difficult considering it usually consists of standing on the driveway with a bucket and the hose. Not to mention that he just stands there and lets you do whatever you need to. It's the post-wash that's a pain. Wet dog for hours, all the loose hair, etc etc. But he always smells so fresh I wonder why it takes me so long to do it again.

#DecemberPhotoADay pt 2

The second half of December seemed to fly by even faster than the first half with the end of the semester, the holidays, our anniversary and somehow the start of school again already. But even thought I wasn't necessarily posting these shots on Instagram (and even though many have already made an appearance here in some other post) I wanted to share with you the second half of my December Photo A Day Challenge even if we're already a good ways into January!
makes you feel merry // tree // big
'tis the season to // i'm listening to // on the door
sparkly // tradition // wrapped
best bit of your day // where you slept // what you're doing now
something awesome // reflect, best bit of 2013 // you // celebrate

I'm not taking on the challenge and continuing with the month of January but I'm glad I was able to complete one month at least. I love looking back through the month plus it helps me document more happenings in our life than just my mind-maps and white board outlines for school.

To view the first half of December, go here!

Finish This v1

recent pictures of O-dog that haven't made an appearance yet just incase you needed a golden fix

1. I first felt like a grown up… once I was married. All through college I was fortunate enough to have my mom's help on a lot of things like finances, insurance coverage, etc etc and once I got married all of that was different. I was on my husbands insurance, my bills were my own, I was 100% responsible for myself without the underlying "mom's always there" aspect anymore. Not to mention I was part of a new "family" between J and I that was uniquely ours which definitely makes one feel grown up I think.

2. I am one of a kind because… of nothing in particular but everything all together. No one's lived my life exactly as I have, no one has the set of talents and pitfalls that I do, no ones seen vacations and new cities through my eyes, no one knows the effects of my emotions quite like I do.

3. Spanx… never worn them, don't have any intention of ever wearing them but haven't been through a lot of "life" yet so we'll see what my body feels like doing in the coming decade.

4. My favorite family tradition… Mother's Day trips on educational adventures like the museum, the zoo, etc with my mom and sister. We're definitely nerds. The homemade gift tradition on Christmas with J's mom's side of the family especially since it spurred our fabulous engagement 2 years ago. And the idea of creating new traditions with J and a someday family in the future.

5. The last thing I do before bed is… smooch my husband, definitely. But this sometimes also includes turning off the TV (yep, we're one of those couples that watches TV in bed, oops), setting my alarm way too early, slathering on some chapstick and/or telling the dog to stop snoring.

6. Happiness is… a free weekend, extra hot Starbucks drinks, freshly painted toes, A's in medical school and life with my hubs.

I'm linking up to the first addition of the "Finish This" link up.

This Weekend I...

 This weekend I….

+ Had dinner with my momma and sister before she heads back to school
+ Watched the snow fall, and then more snow fall
+ Thought we might be snowed in since neither of us have very "snow-friendly" cars
+ Played tricks on Ollie while he snoozed on the couch
+ Watched him sprawl out on our freshly made bed
+ Finished taking down Christmas decorations
+ Watched football, ate mac n cheese & ice cream and didn't go to the gym
+ Painted my toes and touched up my 4 week old shellac manicure
+ Tried new recipes for dinner
+ And of course, studied, but what else is new!
