Mother's Day Gift Idea

For those of you who aren't thinking about it yet, Mother's Day is May 8th this year. And yes, that's only about two weeks away. I knew I would be making something for my momma this year since, well, that's what I do. Word of advice, mom's always love homemade :-)

While I was shopping at Target today, I had to wander past the photo albums and scrap book section just to get ideas and see if anything was on sale. Well I came across this (sorry for the photo quality, I only had my phone with me) and instantly thought, I can totally make that!

__________________________________________

So I did!

[1] Start by cutting three rectangles out of card stock. They hang over a 4 x 6 picture just slightly. My final measurements were 5 x 7 (around the outer edges) with a width of 3/4 in.

[2] Cut three solid pieces of tough card board measuring 5 x 7 also. I used an old shoe box.

[3] After picking out what scrap book paper you want to use, cut three 6 x 8 inch rectangles. I wanted mine to hang over on the front a total of 1/2 inch on both sides (this will make more sense in step 8) so I cut out 1/2in squares from each corner. If you want it to hang over more just add the amount to each side.

[4] Fold up the sides, almost like you're making a really shallow box. Make sure to really press down on the fold, I used the end of a ruler to make the edge crisp.

[5] Place the two other pieces you've cut out before inside your little box. Hot glue the card board piece (red color) to the scrapbook paper itself.

[6] Carefully folder over the scrapbook flaps and glue them to the card stock (white color).

[7] With an X-acto knife or razor blade carefully cut out an opening on one of the short sides so you can insert your picture later. This step is a little tricky, just be careful not to stick in the blade too deep. You only want the opening to be the size of your picture (4 inches), not the whole length of the side.

[8] I glued strips of a coordinating color paper to add a little dimension to the frame. This is why I only had to overlap 3/4 in (from step 3) because the green paper would cover the white edge. I covered the front with a thin layer of modge podge to make sure the edges were sealed and to give it a slightly glossy look. I also added a few rosettes to one of the frame to make it more "spring-y".

[9] Glue ribbon down the backs and separate the three however far you like. Form a simple loop at the top to hang it from and cut the ribbons so you don't see them on the bottom frame. I added a little message to my mom on the bottom frame so we'd be able to remember what this was for.

[10] Print a few pictures (of you, your siblings, your family, your mom) and you're finished! Mine will be going in the mail sometime soon. It's a perfect gift that can be hung easily because it's so light.

I will be adding these frames to my Blog Sale so go check it out!

Broken HD = Broken Heart

Today is a sad day ladies and gentlemen.
Well, technically it was yesterday.
But it's still lingering.

My MacBook is officially broken.
Okay, so I don't know if it's "official" yet
but given the fact that it:
doesn't turn on
stays on either a blank gray screen
or a screen with a question mark folder
makes odd clicking sounds

That's broken in my book.

And I feel like this...

Honestly, that's probably a little too angry.
It's more like this....
I have to keep myself from not thinking about losing everything on my computer.
All my pictures, my music, my files......
Let's be real, it's really just about my pictures.
It makes me want to cry.

And the dumbest thing about it all is that
I have a stinking external drive!
But did I copy everything on there recently?
Of course not. That would just make things too easy.

Please, please, PLEASE Genius Bar tell me it's not too late.
Please work your magic and tell me my computer's fine
and most importantly that you can get all my stuff back to me.

:-(

The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

Today I'm mixing it up a bit and categorizing my life as of recently. Because we all know that I'm OCD and organization is one of my best friends (along with Office Depot, color coordination and alphabetizing) I figured this would be a fun way for you to see into my life.

[The Good]

1. I was recently nominated to be recognized as the Outstanding Biology Graduate at our commencement ceremony in May. They called me into the advising office and gave me an envelope. I was sorta worried they were going to tell me I missed a requirement or something crazy so I was extremely surprised to be given such a nomination. Now with my entry essay completed I have to wait and hope that they pick me!

2. Speaking of graduation, it is surely fast approaching. According to my good friends convenient iPhone countdown app I think we're at less than 35 days. I picked up my cap and gown on Tuesday and even decided to take advantage of the photo session they were holding for free. Can't pass up a "no sitting fee" opportunity can I?
3. I will be graduating manga cum laude *happydance* and hopefully (if I can get a 4.0 this semester) it will be summa cum laude! I can't even begin to believe that undergrad is almost over and on top of it that I might be graduating with honors.

4. J and I have started playing tennis together in the evenings and we are loving it. It was a random purchase to get the rackets but we are definitely glad we did. I am not very good at this point but we just play for fun and for good exercise. I'm really happy we have something fun to do together.

[The Bad]

1. I received notice in the mail the other day saying that I was again placed on another alternate list for acceptance into medical school. This time it was for Creighton University instead of University of Colorado. I'm feeling a little more discouraged this time around since these are my only two options left for school for the fall. I'm definitely not giving up because I still have a chance but it's definitely not a good feeling. Fingers crossed those with acceptances choose to go to other schools.

2. I have volunteering tonight, work on Saturday and most likely work on Sunday as well. The worst part of it is that we are having fabulous weather in San Diego right now. 70's and sunshine and the last place I want to be is inside.

[The Ugly]

1. Yesterday while standing chatting with a few friends on campus I was suddenly hit in the ankle with some idiots skateboard. He tried to slow down, jumped off the board and it went shooting across the ground only to stop when it hit me full force. Hard. I followed the incident by telling him "that's why they don't allow skateboarding on campus!" and didn't try to hide my disgust for him. He said sorry, walked away and I limped the whole rest of the night, seriously.

2. Gas prices are ridiculous in San Diego right now. I paid $40 to put 9.5 gallons of gas into my car the other day. That amounts to $4.15 a gallon! And my car gets at least 29 mpg still... I couldn't imagine what I'd feel like if I drove a truck right now.

[Target Tuesday] v3

It's that time of the week again!
Yes, it's Target Tuesday at Fabulous But Evil and I'm linking up for the third time.

Today I'm posting on comfy, yet fashionable, spring outfits. If you're a real life friend of mine (or even a bloggy friend) you probably know that I'm not one to dress up, do my hair, and wear heals every day of the week. I'm more comfortable and much happier in t-shirts and shorts with occasional dressing up for special reasons. So here are my favorite pieces that can be easily thrown on while still looking put together.

I've done it.

I've officially put a few things up FOR SALE on the blog!

I've been wanting to do this for sometime now but wasn't sure what kind of reaction I would get. Then I figured it wouldn't hurt to just give it a try. There are only two types of items currently listed but I will be adding more as per the interest level/my busy-ness level in the coming weeks.

For now, here is a preview of the awesome colors that are available.
I'm not showing product because you'll have to click over to see them for yourself.

The items can be found under the "Blog Sale" page under my header.
See up there....

And just incase, I've dropped the link in anyways just because I'm sweet like that :-)

So please, do me a favor a check it out. Let me know what you think. Let me know if there's anything you want. Let me know if there's anything you wish was different.

Arithmetic to Zipper.... Apple to Zeal

Today I'm playing along with the A to Z questionnaire that's been circulating blog-land for a while now. I love reading everyone else's facts but for some reason never wanted to do it for myself. Until now.

A: Age: 22. And as I was filling this out I realized that technically I'm 22 years, 2 months, and 2 days old. Weird right?

B: Bed Size: Queen. J and I updated from our double a year or so ago and are much happier. But now that we have our fur baby, we sorta want a king... or Cali King according to J.

C: Chore You Dislike: It's a close tie between drying dishes and doing laundry. I love washing dishes but never, ever dry them right away. I hate it. and I love having all the laundry done but hate actually taking the time to do it.

D: Dogs: If you've read my blog at all, you know the answer to this. We love our Ollie boy. In fact, why not include a picture just to mix things up.
E: Essential Start To Your Day: Honestly, I don't think I have a single thing that I do every morning. Besides the physical get out of bed. I don't always shower (don't judge me) and I don't always have coffee and I don't always check email/make breakfast/anything that classifies as typical morning activity.

F: Favorite Color: Yellow. Any shade.

G: Gold or Silver: All of the jewelry I wear on a daily basis is silver and most of the jewelry I own is silver. I prefer it that way (white gold counts as well) and I hope that the rest of the jewelry I get in my lifetime is silver too. I do have a pair of awesome gold earrings and my pearl necklace is on a gold chain so I don't completely eliminate gold 100%.

H: Height: 5' 4" Not too little, not too tall in my opinion.

I: Instruments you play(ed): I was a band kid since 3rd grade so I've played my fair share of instruments. Started with piano and then learned (in order) clarinet, flute, oboe, bassoon, and french horn. I specifically played oboe and french horn and just picked up the others along the way. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, go here. :-)

J: Job Title: Student. Panera Bread Associate. Fur-Baby Momma.

L: I live for ___: Helping those around me. Hence the reason I want to be a doctor but even on a smaller level I love doing things for other people specifically the people I cherish.

M: Most Embarrassing Moment: J and I had just started dating and were hanging out all.the.time. One evening we decided to make dinner at his mom's house for the two of us. The rest of his family was home (but not eating with us for some reason?) and just happened to witness me struggling with a bag of shredded cheese. The bag would not open for the life of me. I pulled and pulled and then bam, there was cheese all over the kitchen. Shredded cheese mind you. I was beyond embarrassed.

N: Nicknames: Only specific people call me specific nicknames. There's nothing that's stuck for everyone all the time. Some friends call me Jaym. Two specific people call me Jay. People I worked with called me by my last name. My mom calls me Pud.

O: Overnight Hospital Stays: I've been to the hospital for random things (like hurting my thumb skiing) but never had to stay overnight.

P: Pet Peeves: I'm pretty OCD so there are many things that irritate me, I'll try to limit my list here.
* People who walk on the left side of a hallway and/or go through the left side of a double door.
* People who chew gum like they're eating a steak.
* Groups of people that stand in the middle of the hall/sidewalk/etc. Just move over.
* Not letting someone merge into traffic when they've been signaling forever.
* People who leave empty water bottles, coffee cups or trash at their desk in class as opposed to throwing it away in the trashcan by the door.
* Writing in pencil on notebook paper.

Q: Quote From A Movie: "Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die." (extra points if you can name the movie)

R: Reading Now: I'm currently working on two books The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets Nest and Something Borrowed. I've been working on the Stieg Larsson series for a while now and must finish Something Borrowed before the movie comes out.

S: Siblings: I have a younger sister, she's 18 and her name is Lex. (Alexis technically)

T: Time You Wake Up: Usually between 7 and 9 depending on the day. Earlier if I have to be at work at 8:30 and later if I have no where to be. Although I have to admit that I can't sleep in like I used to anymore. Long gone are the days of sleeping till 11 and my body usually wakes me up by 9 now.

U: University Attended: San Diego State University. I did take a summer class at University of Colorado Denver while I was home one summer and hopefully I'll be able to add a med school to this list soon.

V: Vegetables Disliked: I'm not a huge veggie fan, I'm much more of a fruit girl that's for sure. Basically the only ones I do eat are carrots, peppers, lettuce, celery, cucumbers, broccoli and sometimes tomatoes.

W: What Makes You Run Late: I'm typically not late most of the time but I'm often rushing to get out of the house so I'm not late. Typical delays include, taking ollie out, getting caught up watching a DVRed show, reading just one more blog, or standing in the hot water in the shower too long.

X-Rays You've Had: Shoulder, thumb and teeth. From swimming, skiing and... life I guess. Ha.

Y: Yummy Food You Make: I love to bake. Cookies, brownies, muffins, cupcakes. I also make a mean chili and a killer, extra meaty, food-coma-inducing lasagna.

Z: Zoo Animal Favorite: Elephants, hands down. They fascinate me and I want them to be my friends.
